Kelli McMullen-Temple's Olympic horse is no stranger to the Games. McMullen-Temple road aboard Kilkenny, a 12-year-old Irish thoroughbred, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for Canada and placed fifth individually among the team competitors. The following year, Kilkenny posted a clear cross-country round with McMullen-Temple at the 1997 European Open Championships in Burghley, England.

  To qualify for the Games she competed at the Over The Wall Advanced Horse Trials at Great Meadowbrook Farm in Massachusetts in August. She led from start to finish among 18 entries, also incurring no jumping faults on cross-country.
