Carol Montgomery is Canada's first two sport athlete at the same Olympic Games and could be the first medal winner of the 2000 Games. The world triathlon championship runner-up won the women's division at a World Cup in Rio this past winter to qualify for the triathlon at the Sydney Olympics. The women's triathlon is the first final of the 2000 Games.

  A few weeks later she raced a personal best 32:11.79 in the 10,000 metre to meet one of the required standards to compete in the track and field event in Sydney. Montgomery's performances are remarkable considering she underwent major surgery on her left leg in December after experiencing cramping and swelling which forced her to change her stride and hampered her performance. Tests showed she had a partially-blocked artery.

  She was Canada's triathlete and duathlete of the year in 1993. In 1995, she won silver and bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres respectively at the 1995 Pan Am Games. She had contemplated retirement after a disappointing triathlon bronze at the 1999 Pan Ams in Winnipeg.
