Rick Roberts got into field hockey when a friend from school was playing on
a team. He went out to watch and they were short players, so he gave it a
try. After years of ice hockey, it came naturally to him and he picked up
the game quickly. He now plays professionally in Hamburg, Germany for
Uhlenhorster A.C. Roberts is hopeful for a podium finish in Sydney, and
sees it as a stepping stone to the 2002 World Cup which will be his 'swan
song'. He says reluctantly that the unprecedented media coverage after the
incident with Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 was good for
awareness of the sport, even if it was negative publicity. Outside of the
game, Roberts has played guitar for the past 20 years and enjoys playing
and writing music.
