Kyle Smerdon was arguably the most unexpected Olympic team qualifier at the
trials held in Montreal this past June. Smerdon made the cut as an
alternate on the men's 4X100 freestyle relay.
Coincidentally his grandmother Dorothy Lyon won a gold medal for Canada in
the women's 4X100 freestyle relay at the 1938 British Empire Games (now
called the Commonwealth Games) in Sydney, Australia.
The University of Toronto student, spent most of childhood in Oman, a
middle-eastern country near Saudi Arabia. He returned to Canada at age
seven but headed to Houston for his final years of high school. His father
is map maker.
