Shipley seizes Olympic kayak spot
OCOEE RIVER, Tenn. (AP) -- Scott Shipley earned a spot Saturday in the Sydney Olympics, winning the single kayak for the second straight day in the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Olympic slalom trials.
Shipley, of Poulsbo, Wash., had a winning total of 224.81 points in the second race. Eric Giddens of Atlanta was second at 232.07. The third round is Sunday.
David Hearn of Bethesda, Md., won the second race in the single canoe with 243.99 points. Olympic gold medalist Joe Jacobi of Copperhill, Tenn., was second at 256.01.
David Hepp of Cullowhee, N.C., and Scott McCleskey of Dunwoody, Ga., won the double canoe with a 259.87 total. Lecky Haller of Glencoe, Md., and Matt Taylor, of Atlanta, followed at 266.46.
Cathy Hearn, of Garrett Park, Md., edged first-day winner Rebecca Bennett-Giddens, of Atlanta, in the women's single kayak. Hearn had 281.94 points, and Bennett-Giddens had 285.30.
