Buday brothers, Apostol qualify for Olympics

  • Results

MONTREAL (CP) -- Tamas and Attila Buday of Mississauga, Ont., won a showdown race Saturday for the Olympic spot in the men's canoe pairs 1,000 metres at the second and final set of Games trials in canoe and kayak.

Mihai Apostol of Halifax earned a berth in the men's kayak singles 1,000.

The men's C-2 race was a winner-take-all between the Buday brothers, fourth at the world championships last year, and Richard Dalton of Halifax and Mike Scarola of Dartmouth, N.S.

The Nova Scotia pair won the opening trial race last month in Georgia to force Saturday's showdown.

The Budays overcame a slow start to take control of the race at about the 200-metre mark and clocked three minutes 37.720 seconds. Dalton and Scarola made a late charge, but fell short in 3:38.079. Sean Cannon of Lac-Beauport, Que., and Andre Pellerin of Halifax were third in 3:45.163.

"I'm so mentally exhausted," said Attila Buday, 25. "There was so much pressure and it took all my energy to keep focused for this race.

"Right now I'm trying to feel my arms and legs again because they are like jello."

The Budays also will be competing in the C-2 500 at the Summer Games.

Apostol clocked 3:37.771 in the men's K-1 1,000 to earn his second career berth for the Olympics. He also won the event at the first trials.

Adrian Richardson of Kemptville, Ont., was second in 3:38.087 and Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., placed third in 3:39.575.

In the men's C-1 1,000, 1998 world champion Steve Giles of Lake Echo, N.S., kept his hopes alive for third straight Olympic berth by winning the event in 3:59.970. Dimitri Joukovski was second in 4:05.088 and Andre Pellerin of Halifax third in 4:05.929.

Maxime Boilard of Lac-Beauport, who upset Giles in both the 500- and 1,000-metre events at the first set of trials, has shoulder tendinitis and is not competing.

If Giles sweeps the weekend events, the two could split berths on the team for Sydney, Australia, with Boilard racing the 500 and Giles the 1,000.

At the first trials last month, world champion Caroline Brunet of

Lac-Beauport qualified for the Olympics in the women's K-1 500 and K-2 500 with partner Karen Furneaux of Waverley, N.S.

Canada also has qualified a boat for the women's K-4 500. Veteran Marie-Josee Gibeau-Ouimet of Lachine, Que., is the only member assured a berth on that crew. The others will be decided after World Cup events in Europe.
