U.S. Diving rejects Pichler's complaint
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Once again, Olympian David Pichler failed to get eight-time Olympic coach Ron O'Brien booted off the diving staff.
Pichler protested O'Brien's presence on the staff for the Sydney Games, but U.S. Diving rejected the complaint. He filed a similar protest against O'Brien in 1996 that also was thrown out.
The two have been at odds for about five years. Pichler's problems with O'Brien began while he was diving on the now-retired coach's Fort Lauderdale, Fla., teams in the mid-1990s.
Pichler will dive on the U.S. team in Sydney, while O'Brien serves as U.S. Diving's technical director.
"U.S. Diving has reviewed David Pichler's complaint and found it without merit," said Jim Stillson, chairman of the Olympic International Committee of U.S. Diving. "We strongly support Dr. Ron O'Brien and are grateful for his ongoing assistance to our Olympic coaching staff."
In 1996, there were several incidents between Pichler, his companion Steven Guiffre, O'Brien and O'Brien's son, Tim. After the '96 trials, Pichler, who made the Olympic team, said he felt harassed by O'Brien.
