Bulmer, Hartley to represent Canada in diving

By DONNA SPENCER -- Canadian Press

MONTREAL -- Eryn Bulmer of Edmonton and Blythe Hartley of North Vancouver, B.C., will represent Canada in the women's three-metre springboard event at the Olympics in Sydney this September.

Bulmer, 23, and Hartley, 18, who both train in Calgary, finished 1-2 at the Canadian Olympic diving trials on Friday evening.

Bulmer, who competed at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and is considered a medal threat in Sydney, trailed Hartley after the preliminaries and semifinals, but overtook her club teammate in the third round by scoring sevens on her back double pike.

"Going into the final (Friday) evening, I was a little bit nervous. I felt the excitement, but after the first dive I felt like relaxed a bit," said Bulmer. "It was not easy by any means, but everything just felt like it flowed.

"After you do your last dive, it's just an enormous sense of relief."

Bulmer won with a point total of 872.43 followed by Hartley at 846.18. Emilie Heymans of St. Lambert, Que., was considered a contender for an Olympic berth, but missed a dive in the preliminaries and was forced to play catch-up all day. She finished third with 818.73.

Bulmer and Hartley both train under Hui Tong at Dive Calgary.

"She's like my little sister," said Bulmer. "I love her to death and I have more emotion for her making the team tonight than me. That made me cry more.

"Her diving well tonight made me happy for her and really kept me on my toes and pushed myself to be very focused and sharp this evening."

Hartley had a strong preliminary round which was key for her "because usually I don't dive well in the morning," she said.

She felt her last two dives were subpar, but they were good enough to secure an Olympic berth.

"There are other Games and other trials, but so much emphasis is put on the Olympic trials and the Olympics that you can't help feel the pressure," she said. "It's a very scary feeling. I've never been so nervous and never wanted to throw up so much in my life."

Bulmer and Hartley have competed together this season in sychronized diving, which is a new event in the Olympic Games.

"I think that was part of the goal too," said Hartley. "We wanted to make the team and dive synchro together so we're very happy about that."

The men's 10-metre tower final was scheduled for later Friday evening.

Hartley will compete in the women's tower on Sunday, the same day as the men's three-metre springboard finals.
