CALGARY -- Eric Lamaze is on a roll.
A month after winning the Canadian Show Jumping Championship, the Quebec
rider is taking his winning act to the North American ring.
He won his third event in a row last night as he and Mill Creek Raphael
beat American legend Leslie Burr-Howard in a dramatic jump-off to capture the
PanCanadian Cup.
Earlier in the day, he won the Reid Crowther Open to complete a sweep of
the day's event in the international ring.
His victories ended a long run of success for American riders in the last
two competitions at Spruce Meadows.
The absence of several of Canada's best riders has left Lamaze to carry the
flag for the national team and he's done it with amazing flair.
His victories have in part led Canada to a lead in the Nortel Networks
Riders Cup -- with five-point gaps on both the American and European teams.
"That was a great jump-off," said Lamaze of his win by a full second over
Burr-Howard.
"Yeah, you can say this has been a great day for me."
A great two days to start the North American championship, of which
Burr-Howard is the defending champion.
Lamaze's success on Raphael bodes well for Canada. He is making a case to
be one of the selections for the Olympic team headed for Sydney later this
summer.
In the Reid Crowther Open, Lamaze took his speed horse Hushabye through two
clear rides to edge German Sonke Kohrock aboard Liberty in a 15-horse jump
off.
It was Lamaze's second win a row, coming on the heels of his win in
Wednesday night's Lafarge Cup aboard his veteran mount Cagney.
In the PanCanadian Cup, Canadian Jonathon Millar showed he's a growing
threat in the international ring. He threatened to chase down Lamaze in the
jump-off until his horse Fine Line balked at a combination, to leave him in
fifth place behind Howard, Gavin Chester of Australia and American veteran
Beezie Madden.
