Finalists picked for U.S. Olympic team

GLADSTONE, N.J. (AP) -- Three riders from the 1996 Olympic silver medal-winning three-day event team were picked Thursday as finalists for the U.S. Olympic squad in Sydney.

The '96 Olympians include two-time world champion Bruce Davidson of Unionville, Pa., on Eagle Lion, plus the husband-and-wife pair of David and Karen O'Connor of The Plains, Va.

David O'Connor was picked on Rattle N Hum, Custom Made and Giltedge, his '96 mount, while Karen O'Connor was named on Prince Panache.

They are joined on the short list by Nina Fout of Middleburg, Va., on 3 Magic Beans; Abigail Lufkin of Middleburg, on Jacob Two Two, Cameo and Hannigan; and Kim Vinoski of Scottsville, Va., on Over the Limit.

Eight other horse/rider combinations were named to a list of alternates, including Bruce Davidson's son Buck.

The short-listed and alternate riders will be quarantined July 7 in Douglasville, Ga., where they will continue to train. Twelve horses will be shipped to Australia on July 31, and the final squad of seven horse/rider combinations that will compete at the Games will be selected before the event begins on Sept. 16.
