SYDNEY, Australia (CP) -- The Canadian women's softball team dropped to 0-7 today at the International Softball Cup after losing 5-0 to Australia and 1-0 to Japan.
The tournament is a warm-up to the Olympics in September. At the conclusion of the tournament, Canada will reduce its 17-player roster to the 15 who will make up the Canadian Olympic team.
Winnipeg's Heather Newsham suffered the loss against the Aussies, who won on the strength of a three-run homer in the first inning.
Australian pitcher Tanya Harding threw a one-hitter and struck out 12 over six innings.
Against Japan, Canadian starting pitcher Kathy Iggulden of North Delta, B.C., struck out one and allowed three hits, including an RBI single in the sixth inning. Newsham struck out four and went hitless in her 1 2-3 innings of relief.
Canada stranded four runners with hits coming from Denise Carriere of Bramalea, Ont., Meaggan Wilton of Blenheim, Ont., and Kristy Odamura of Richmond, B.C.
Canada meets China on Saturday. The final is Sunday.
