Australia 3, New Zealand 2, 10 innings
BLACKTOWN, Australia (AP) -- Peta Edebone hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning on Sunday to rally Australia to a 3-2 victory over New Zealand and rescue the medal favorites from a potentially embarrassing upset.
The teams each scored once in the third inning, then did little until Australia threatened in the sixth and seventh. But the hosts, who are ranked No. 2 in the world, couldn't break the tie in the regulation seven innings.
According to softball rules, each team starts every inning after the ninth with a runner on second.
New Zealand's Melissa Upu bunted the runner to third, and then Gina Weber singled up the middle to make it 2-1. Helen Townsend walked, then Kiri Shaw was robbed of a base hit when Natalie Ward made a diving stop at shortstop and popped up to throw to first to end the inning.
Sally McReedy couldn't get the bunt down for Australia, striking out to lead off the bottom of the 10th. But Edebone homered deep to left-center field to send the hometown crowd -- or those who stayed, at least -- into a frenzy.
After the game, the players came out of the dugout for a curtain call, and threw gifts into the stands.
Melanie Roche earned the victory, pitching 10 innings of four-hit ball, striking out 13 and walking two. Weber allowed three hits and five walks, striking out two for New Zealand.
