Japan sticks it to Cuba

Japan 4, Cuba 1
BLACKTOWN, Australia (AP) -- Juri Takayama struck out seven while pitching a three-hitter, and Haruka Saito homered Sunday to lead Japan to a 4-1 victory over Cuba in the preliminary round of the Olympic softball tournament.

Saito homered to lead off the game, and Hiroko Tamoto added an RBI single in the second inning to give Japan a 2-0 lead. Japan scored twice more in the fourth, loading the bases before Misako Ando's RBI groundout and Reika Utsugi's single.

Takayama held Cuba hitless until Maria Zamora singled with two out in the sixth inning.

Olga Ruyol homered in the seventh to give Cuba its only run.
