Sydor cycles to silver

WINNIPEG (CP) -- Alison Sydor of Victoria won a silver medal in the women's mountain bike race and Chris Sheppard of Kamloops, B.C. took the bronze in the men's event on a day Canada captured three gold, two silver and five bronze for a total of 111 medals at the Pan Am Games.

The Canadian women's soccer team can do no better than a bronze medal after losing 5-3 on penalty kicks to Mexico. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation and extra time.

"There was no lack of effort from the players," said head coach Neil Turnbull of Edmonton. "Just the way they carried themselves, it was first-class. Each game, we've gone out, we've tried to improve both individually and as a team and I'm proud of them."

The unbeaten U.S. women, entered as an under-18 squad, moved into the final with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica earlier.

The Canadian women's basketball team lost 76-65 to Cuba after leading by two points at the half.

Renata Kolbovic of Vancouver lost to Alexandra Stevenson of the U.S. in a women's tennis quarter-final.

Canada's men's softball team beat Guatemala 1-0, while the Canadian women beat the Netherlands Antilles 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Cuban delegation turned up the volume on their complaints about the treatment of their athletes.

And sports agent Joe Cubas said 19-year-old Cuban baseball pitcher Danys Baez has sought asylum in Canada, which would make him the eighth Cuban to defect at these Games.
