BASKETBALL
Women: Canada lost 70-58 to France in round-robin play, dropping to 1-2 record.
BOXING
Light welterweight (63.5-kg): Mike Strange, Niagara Falls, Ont., lost 9-3 on points to Nurhan Suleymanoglu, Turkey, in opening-round bout.
CYCLING
Women's sprint: Tanya Dubnicoff, Winnipeg, finished seventh overall.
Men's 40-kilometre points race: Mike Walton, Vancouver, finished ninth in final.
EQUESTRIAN
Individual Three-Day Event: Wyn St. John, Vancouver, riding Oliver, was 30th after dressage test; Bruce Mandeville, New Westminster, B.C., on Larissa, was 33rd.
FIELD HOCKEY
Men: Canada lost 5-2 to the Netherlands, dropping to 0-2-1 in Pool A round-robin play.
JUDO
Men's middleweight (90-kg): Keith Morgan, Calgary, def. Robert Ivers, Australia, yusei-gachi, in Pool A first round; beat Rasul Salimov, Azerbaijan, ippon, in second round, and won by ippon over Jean Claude Raphael, Mauritius, in quarter-finals; lost to Mark Huizinga, Netherlands, by ippon, in semifinals, then lost by ippon to Rusian Mashurenko, Ukraine.
ROWING
Men's eight: Michael Belenkie, Calgary; Bryan Donnelly, Calgary; Matt Swick, St. Catharines, Ont.; Tom Herschmiller, Comox, B.C.; Lawrence Varga, Nanoose Bay, B.C.; Morgan Crooks, Lethbridge, Alta.; David Calder, Victoria; Adam Parfitt, Victoria, and Chris Taylor, St. Catharines), finished third in repechage heat, eliminated.

Women: Canada def. Italy 7-1 in round-robin play, raising record to 1-3.
SWIMMING
Men's 200-metre backstroke: Chris Renault, Calgary, finished sixth in semifinal heat, eliminated; Dustin Hersee, Vancouver, placed seventh in heat, eliminated.
Men's 200-metre individual medley: Curtis Myden, Calgary, finished sixth in semifinal heat, eliminated; Brian Johns, Richmond, B.C., was eighth in semifinal heat, eliminated.
