Sunday, January 18, 1998 Kucera wins Nordic combined eventCHAUX-NEUVE, France (AP) -- Milan Kucera of the Czech Republic earned his first World Cup victory, edging Felix Gottwald of Austria in a Nordic combined event Sunday.Kucera was in third place following the jumping portion of the event with a score of 234 points. He trailed Ludovic Roux of France and Mario Stecher of Austria. In the afternoon, Kucera, the 1991 junior world champion, was timed in 43 minutes, 13.2 seconds, for the 15-kilometer cross-country skiing, overtaking Roux and Stecher, both over 44 minutes. Gottwald finished second and Roux third. Bjarte Engen Vik of Norway leads the World Cup standings after nine events.
