Friday, August 13, 1999Graf's retirement leaves hole in du MaurierTORONTO (CP) -- Steffi Graf's retirement on the eve of Canada's du Maurier Open on Friday left organizers with a big hole in the tournament.Graf was the second-seeded player in the tournament, which begins today with qualifying matches at Toronto's National Tennis Centre. Graf is a two-time winner of the du Maurier in 1990 and 1993. The German superstar would have packed the stands at the $1.05-million event if she had made it her farewell appearance. "While we are disappointed that tennis fans around the world won't have an opportunity to watch her play one more time, we respect the decision she has made today," said du Maurier tournament director Jane Wynne. Poland's Magdalena Grzybowska, ranked 235th by the WTA, will replace Graf in the tournament. Russia's Elena Likhovtseva moves up to become the 16th seed in the tournament. Qualifying takes place today and Sunday. The main draw, which starts Monday, will be made tonight. TSN, RDS and Sportsnet will broadcast matches throughout the week. CTV will televise the semifinal on Aug. 21 and the sold-out singles final on Aug. 22. There are limited tickets available for the semifinals. |
