German officials visit cop's family
PARIS (AP) -- German soccer officials visited the family of the French policeman beaten into a coma by German neo-Nazis after a World Cup game.
Soccer federation president Egidius Braun and general secretary Horst Schmidt on Wednesday went to see Lorette Nivel, wife of Daniel Nivel, to offer sympathy.
Nivel has been in a coma since the hooligans beat him with an iron bar on June 21 in Lens, where Germany played Yugoslavia. Doctors say he has permanent brain damage. Three suspects have been arrested.
The Nivels, who have two children, live in Arras, near Lens in northern France.
Mrs. Nivel thanked the officials for all the sympathy coming from Germany, according to a federation statement. Several charities have been started there for the family.
The German federation plans to set up a foundation against violence in soccer and name it after Nivel. The federation already has collected $330,000 in donations.
Also, French and German veterans will play in a charity game in September to raise money for the Nivel family.
