Friday, April 10, 1998No substitute for BaggioBOLOGNA, Italy (AP) -- A survey shows that most Italian soccer fans want Roberto Baggio on Italy's World Cup team in France -- but as a reserve player. In the survey by the monthly magazine Calcio 2000, whose results were made public Friday, 72 per cent said the 31-year-old forward should be included in the Italian national team for the 1998 World Cup. However, 59 per cent suggested he should be sitting on the substitutes bench. The magazine noted that Baggio is seen by most fans as a possible "tactical weapon" to be fielded for portions of matches to produce a key play. Baggio, who plays with first-division Bologna, was Italy's hero at the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., scoring decisive goals and helping the team reach the final against Brazil. Italy's Coach Cesare Maldini is expected to announced the 22-player roster early in May.
