European Union end court battle with France over World Cup stadium

BRUSSELS (AP) -- The European Union Commission announced today it ended a court battle with French authorities over the bidding procedure to build the Stade de France, the site of the July 12 World Cup final.
The EU's executive Commission had taken the French government to the highest court of the 15-country bloc in June last year charging the bidding process had been unfairly rigged.
The contract was ultimately awarded to the French construction company Bouygues SA.
Today the Commission said French authorities had formally recognized there had been a legal infringement and promised to amend its bidding procedures on the remaining contracts concerning the 80,000-capacity stadium on the outskirts of Paris in Saint-Denis.
The stadium was opened in January and will also be used for the June 10 opening game of the World Cup and eight other games ahead of the final.
