Klinsmann may miss World Cup with broken jaw

LONDON (AP) -- German striker Juergen Klinsmann has a broken jaw and might miss this summer's World Cup and the rest of the English Premier League season with Tottenham.
Klinsmann was released today from a Barnsley hospital, where he spent the night under observation following a collision in Wednesday's FA Cup fourth-round replay with Barnsley defender Arjan de Zeeuw.
Tottenham, struggling to avoid relegation in the Premier League, lost the game 3-1, which is sure to put more pressure on Swiss coach Christian Gross.
Tottenham officials said Klinsmann would see a specialist today in London. A spokesman at the Barnsley hospital described Klinsmann's condition as satisfactory as he was being discharged.
Tottenham assistant manager Chris Hughton said the injury might not be as bad as expected and said Klinsmann might be back in a few weeks.
De Zeeuw said he wasn't sure what happened.
"To be fair, it was hard to tell what happened," he said. "We both went for a ball, I fell backwards and my knee came up. I think he (Klinsmann) fell forward and hit my knee.
"I heard a crack and at first I thought it was my shinpad. Then I saw that he was on the ground. The physio started screaming. I think they were worried that he had swallowed his tongue."
The injury came shortly after German national team coach Berti Vogts had said that the 33-year-old Klinsmann could still play a key role in Germany's World Cup quest this summer in France.
The injury is the third in the last few days to key World Cup players.
Brazilian Juninho, playing for Spain's Atletico de Madrid, suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle Sunday and is sure to almost certain to miss the World Cup.
Also on Sunday, Italian defender Ciro Ferrara broke his leg and is expected to be lost for France.
Ferrara, 30, underwent surgery today with doctors inserting a screw in the leg to help the healing of the fractured tibia and fibula.
Juventus team doctor Riccardo Agricola said the procedure went well, and that recovery time for Ferrara is "four to six months."
