Who's Iran's coach?
TEHRAN (AP) -- With five months to go until the World Cup, Iran's top
clubs are refusing to allow their players to attend a national team training
camp and the country still hasn't decided on a coach.
Only 12 players reported for training, which began Monday under the
supervision of an assistant coach.
Iran, which plays the United States on June 21 at Lyon, France, still
hasn't decided on a coach, apparently not wanting to let Valdir Vierra continue.
Former Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo and former Italy coach Arrigo
Sacchi have been mentioned as possibilities along with Tomislav Ivich of the
Czech Republic, Udo Lattek of Germany and Tilo Vingada of Portugal.
"It's useless to look for such expensive coaches," the daily newspaper
Hamshahri said. "We don't have to pay huge amounts of money to get the same
result. Vierra is fine. Why don't you trust him?"
Vierra took over the team for its final three World Cup qualifiers.
Iran lost a playoff to Japan in overtime, then won a home-and-home playoff
against Australia for the final spot in the 32-nation field.
This will be Iran's second World Cup and the first since
1978.
