Wednesday, March 11, 1998Leaders of North and South Korea invited to World Cup openingPARIS (AP) -- Soccer's world governing body has invited the leaders of North and South Korea to the opening ceremony of this summer's World Cup on June 10.FIFA president Joao Havelange made the offer late Tuesday to North Korean president Kim Jong-il and South Korean Premier Kim Dae-Jung, in the hope that it would "help demonstrate sporting unity" and improve political relations between the two nations. The ceremony at the new Stade de France will be followed by the opening game between current world champion Brazil, and Scotland. Havalange also suggested North Korea should be considered as a venue during the 2002 World Cup, which will be held in South Korea and Japan, FIFA officials said.
