Blatter's going for goal
PARIS (AP) -- As a former center-forward, FIFA secretary general Sepp Blatter says he's
going for goal. That goal is the FIFA presidency.
The 62-year-old Swiss officially launched his bid to head soccer's governing body,
promising Monday that players, coaches, referees and national associations will a greater say in the
running of the game.
UEFA president Lennart Johanson is the only other announced candidate. Blatter says is
supported by 15 nations thus far, including the United States.
"I am a team player, not an individual," he said. "I was a center forward, a number 9 going
for goal, but always getting the ball from someone."
So he expects some high-quality passing from the likes of Michel Platini, one of the game's
most talented players. Blatter would offer of the post of FIFA sports director to Platini, head of
the local organizers for this summer's World Cup and former captain of France's national
team.
