    Violence won't mar bid: Brits

LONDON (AP) -- British government and soccer officials condemned Monday the violence that marred English soccer over the weekend but said the incidents should not harm the country's bid for the 2006 World Cup.
Fullham fan Matthew Fox was killed in clashes with rival Gillingham fans at a Second Division game Saturday, while angry fans ran onto the pitch during the Barnsley-Liverpool and Everton-Aston Villa games to try to attack the referee.
Sports Minister Tony Banks said the real image of English soccer was represented by Sunday's League Cup final at Wembley that passed off peacefully with nearly 80,000 fans in attendance.
"These isolated very tragic events which the police will deal with are not the true face of English football," he said. "There are still those who turn up at football grounds who should never be allowed into football grounds. Of course there will always be that very, very small minority who spoil it for others."
The weekend violence brought back memories of the widespread hooliganism which tarnished English soccer in the 1980s and raised questions about England's 2006 World Cup bid.
