Tuesday, March 3, 1998Abelardo and Karanka in doubt for World CupMADRID (AP) -- Spain's World Cup hopes suffered a blow Tuesday with the likely loss of defenders Aitor Karanka and Abelardo Fernandez.Real Madrid's Karanka was released from a hospital Tuesday after being admitted last week with heart pains and an irregular heart beat. He may not play again until next season with Real Madrid team doctor Alfonso del Corral saying he would need two or three months to regain fitness. Barcelona's Abelardo could need between two and four months to recuperate after the defender underwent knee surgery Monday. Another player in the Spanish league, Brazilian Juninho of Atletico de Madrid, suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle last month, which ruined his chance of playing in the World Cup in France this summer.
