Monday, 18 May, 1998Mandela heads South Africa sendoffPRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -- South Africa's World Cup team got a personal sendoff Monday from President Nelson Mandela.Mandela, who celebrated on the field with the South African rugby union team when it won the rugby World Cup in 1995, hopes his support will help the soccer team, too. "On behalf of the entire country, I say to you: godspeed," Mandela told the players before shaking hands with each member. "I don't have the slightest doubt you will return with honors." South Africa plays Zambia in an exhibition game Wednesday before leaving for Argentina for another warmup game, and then proceeding to Germany to train for the tournament.
