Wednesday, May 20, 1998Blatter is confidentNAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- FIFA general secretary Sepp Blatter said Wednesday he was confident most African soccer federations would vote for him next month to replace Joao Havelange as president of soccer's governing body.Blatter told a news conference that despite an earlier claim by the African Football Confederation (CAF) that it would back UEFA president Lennart Johannsson, African federations were coming around to him. "I'm not underrating my rival," Blatter said. "But I'm confident that Africa will support me because of our commitment to develop soccer in this continent." In addition to Africa, Blatter said he has been assured of support from soccer federations from North and South America, Oceania and Asia.
