Striker's role up for grabs
TOKYO (AP) -- Competition is heating up among Japan's strikers for a spot on the team
roster.
Atsushi Yanagisawa, the 20-year-old forward who has been off and on the national team, had
been scoreless for the last six games with his professional J-League team, the Kashima Antlers. But
he had three goals today in a 3-0 win against Jubilo Iwata, suddenly boosting his chances.
Jubilo striker Masashi Nakayama, 30, who recently set a J-League record with four straight
hat tricks, was held scoreless. But the league's leading scorer is practically guaranteed a spot on
the national team roster.
Still unknown is whether 31-year-old Kazuyoshi 31, for years Japan's biggest name in
soccer, will be brought back after losing his spot on the team in March.
