    More calls for Matthaeus

MUNICH (AP) -- Lothar Matthaeus back on the German team?
There have been growing calls for Matthaeus to be on Germany's World Cup roster and today coach Berti Vogts gave the first sign that he might be considering such a move.
"I'll try to talk to Lothar Matthaeus," Vogts told the Sport Bild magazine.
Germany uses the sweeper system and has considered it the most important post on the team since the days of Franz Beckenbauer.
Matthias Sammer, who led Germany to the 1996 European title, is still recovering after his fifth knee injury and has all but been written off. Olaf Thon, his replacement, has been sidelined with an ankle injury.
Vogts dropped Matthaeus before the 1996 European championships. Matthaeus has a frosty relations with captain Juergen Klinsmann, who recently again spoke against the return of Matthaeus.
Matthaeus, 37, has played a record 122 games for Germany and was the captain of the team that won the 1990 World Cup title.
