Thursday, November 13, 1997No TV for final Canadian soccer gameTORONTO (CP) -- Soccer fans won't be able to watch the Canadian soccer team in action Sunday in San Jose, Costa Rica, when it wraps up its unsuccessful bid to qualify for the World Cup finals.TSN, which had aired all nine of Canada's previous games in the final round of qualifying, is showing the NAPA 500 NASCAR race instead. Phil King, TSN's director of programming, said the decision not to show the Canada-Costa Rica game was made with the Canadian Soccer Association. While Canada was still in contention, the World Cup games drew 130,000 to 150,000 viewers -- a good soccer audience that rivalled an average CFL game, King said. The audience dropped in half when the team fell out of contention, he said. Had Canada still been in the hunt for a berth in the finals, TSN would have shown the NASCAR finale on tape delay, King added.
