Jamaica qualifies with tie with Mexico
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Jamaica became the first Caribbean team to
qualify for the World Cup finals in 24 years by holding Mexico to a 0-0 tie
Sunday in front of a wildly celebrating crowd at the National Stadium.
The one point gained from the tie gave Jamaica's "Reggae Boyz" 13
points in the CONCACAF round, guaranteeing the third qualifying position for the
North and Central American and Caribbean region. Mexico and the United States
had already won the other two spots.
Jamaica preserved its unbeaten record at home on its notoriously
tricky field. FIFA, soccer's governing body, threatened earlier this year to
revoke Jamaica's home-team privilege unless it smoothed out the pitch, but the
surface remains unpredictable.
After a disastrous start to the Jamaican campaign, including an 0-6
loss to Mexico and a 1-3 defeat to Costa Rica, the team rebounded soundly with
home wins over El Salvador, Canada and Costa Rica to put themselves in line for
a spot in soccer's top showpiece.
