Sunday, November 16, 1997Controversies mar Yugoslavs' joy over beating HungaryBELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- In the shadow of Yugoslavia's triumphant qualification for the World Cup on Saturday, a Yugoslav team player has received a death threat for once playing for political archrival Croatia.Zeljko Petrovic, who played in the second half, reportedly received a death threat over the phone while preparing for the match, his teammates and media reported Sunday. In the last match to qualify for the World Cup in France next summer, Yugoslavia humbled Hungary 5-0 for an impressive 12-1 aggregate from two encounters. Petrovic is a native of Montenegro, the small republic that, with much bigger Serbia, forms what is left of Yugoslavia. In 1991, the former federation disintegrated in bloodshed as Croatia and three other republics broke away. Petrovic then played for a top Croatian soccer club, Dinamo, now renamed Croatia. "I doesn't feel nice, but I am not afraid. I want to play against Hungary," Petrovic said hours before the match began.
