Injury forces Les Ferdinand out of game

LONDON (AP) -- A stomach injury forced striker Les Ferdinand today to pull out of England's squad for Saturday's vital World Cup qualifier against Italy in Rome.
The Tottenham forward, suffering from a recurrence of the strained muscle which kept him of the Spurs lineup last month, withdrew from the England squad after seeing a doctor this morning.
Ferdinand's absence should not be a huge blow since he was not expected to be in England's starting lineup for Saturday's game, which will determine which country qualifies automatically for the 1998 World Cup in France.
Coach Glenn Hoddle has five other strikers on the roster: Teddy Sheringham, Ian Wright, Robbie Fowler, Paul Scholes and Stan Collymore.
The coach said he would not bring in anyone to fill Ferdinand's spot.
In Italy, meanwhile, Inter Milan defender Fabio Galante arrived at the Italian national team's training camp as added insurance for the game qualifier against England.
Italy coach Cesare Maldini called up the 23-year-old Galante, who has never appeared in a national team game, after learning Ciro Ferrara has a strained right hamstring muscle and may not play.
